Imphal, December 21:
Khumanthem Debabrata, 40, of Thangmeiband Kabrabam Leikai, spokesman of Manipur State Congress Party, MSCP, has been hospitalized after he was shot and seriously wounded by unidentified persons at Langol at around noon today.
Debabrata, who was hit in the right arm and the buttock, is reported to be out of danger, though he suffered a bone fracture in the arm due to the impact of the bullet.
The motive for the shooting is unknown.
According to reliable sources, two unidentified persons came to Debabrata�s residence yesterday and told him that senior leaders of their party wanted to meet him at Langol.
The same men returned this morning at 9 am and told him to come to Langol.
Thereafter Debabrata set out for Langol with three friends in a Maruti van.
The sources said that they were stopped by some youths at the type III jeep parking at Langol, and instructed to climb up the hills.
The youths also reportedly declared that the van would have to be burnt.
The sources further said that Debabrata, who was suspicious at their behaviors, ran away from the spot, but he was pursued and fired upon by the armed men as a result of which he was hit twice.
Debabrata was however rescued by the local meira paibis, who also evacuated him to hospital.
The injured man is currently under treatment at Shija Clinic, Lamphel, where he is said to be out of danger.
Leaders and workers of the MSCP have congregated at the hospital to commensurate with him in connection with the incident.
It may be mentioned that Debabrata is a prospective candidate for the MSCP from Thangmeiband Kendra in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
